Considered one of the parks with the best conservation status, protecting more than 22 miles of beach strip from the mouth of the Tortuguero River south to Parismina, this national park has 19,000 hectares, declared a national park in 1970 to protect the world's green turtle population from extinction, this park is also a wildlife sanctuary for primates, jaguars, green macaws, tapirs and a variety of mammals, birds and reptiles.

The flora and fauna of Tortuguero is impressive, with 186 species of birds identified, 3 of the four species of monkeys in Costa Rica, caimans, crocodiles, toucans, sloths, and much more.
